CRAZY AT THE BEACH

Every day at the beach is a crazy adventure.  The people I meet, the things that happen all have the same thing in common..they handle crazy well or make crazy interesting..  Me?  I love me some crazy. A wise friend once told me the darker your skin gets, the more the beach gets into your blood.  He was right and crazy also.

This is my beach house.  It differs from the "normal" beach house in that it has wheels under it.  Other than that all of the same things apply. It has a front porch where we sit on and chat with the neighbors or each other. There is a cool breeze in the morning and the evening. Life is easier here (once you buy into the crazy). I have worked to make it my own over the last year and the hard edges of the trailer have softened up a bit.

My garden has the most to do with that.  I chose raised beds and planters instead of the ground because it was easier for this old back to tend to them.  I have strawberries, bell pepper, eggplant, squash, cucumber, tomato, basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary, (sorry for you Simon and Garfunkel fans, no sage)and mint.  For mosquito control I found a flat of lemon grass that is growing like, well, crazy.

My mom added two lemon and one lime tree to the mix.  I have Vinca, Coreopsis, Butterfly Weed and Potato Vines that grow like weeds here.  There is also a Banana tree that came with the lot at the corner of the deck.

I make crazy things out of driftwood.  I turn old lanterns that once adorned the outside of a house upside  down, add some wire and one of those solar lights.  I find driftwood knots and stuff air ferns into them.  Most of the time I sit, listen to and watch the birds.  When Salty is here we discuss the cloud formations and watch sunsets.  We drink Coconut water and sometimes even add a little rum to it.  Crazy, huh?

GRANDPARENTING AT IT'S FINEST

I am probably not the best grand parenting model around.  I feel no need to lecture, I don't care how much TV they watch or how many video games they play when they are with me and meal times are interesting affairs.

I do believe I have copped to this before, so I feel no shame in the following story.

I bought my grand daughter an ice cream off this truck at 9:00 this morning.  We were doing an early morning beach swim when we heard the trademark music and mechanical voice that says "hello" in this nasal twang.

I my defense she had already had a kolache and real orange juice.  On this round she chose a cherry Ice Ball.

She just looks so happy with her cherry Ice Ball.  Yes, I am probably buying her love with ice cream.  No, I do not give a darn if I am. We had quite the wonderful morning.

Later in the day some rain ran through and I watched umpteen movies with her about fairies, princesses hiding in Louisiana and Aussie girls who turn into mermaids.  We gave each other pedicures, made necklaces and tried to do bead work out of a kit that proved daunting for the both of us.

We ate pudding, more ice cream and to be fair (mostly to me) watermelon and hamburger patties.  She looked at me and said, "I am having so much fun!"  Do I feel guilt or entertain remorse, Oh hell no.  I am after all...a grand mother.

IT'S A FERRY THING!

I havn't given you a "commute shoot" for a while.  I finally found a spot to get my Cannon fixed and here are some of the latest results.

A boat on a boat.

This almost looked like a small ferry on the ferry.

Of course, others opt to ride instead of their regular mode of transportation:

Then there are those we meet at the four way stop:

I am still having trouble keeping the boats in focus.  Taking a picture from a moving object of a moving object is harder than it looks!

I was able to get a few "in flight" pics that turned out pretty well:

I love the Pelicans.  They are actually very large birds with wing spans that are about six feet fully extended.
Having one flying right at you or just overhead can be a quite alarming.  I've been sketching these wonderful birds hoping to find some wood on the beach to paint them onto.  Hope your day is as great as mine is!

THE ART OF THE SIESTA

I am learning the art of the siesta on my days off. Last summer at the beach and the last week of sweltering humidity has altered my way of working during the day.  Getting out of the heat for the coming months during the afternoon hours between 1:00 and 5:00 will be a must.  This was definitely proved true today as we completed a garden tour in Galveston...it was hot!

DUTCHMAN'S PIPE

It may be my age that makes me adjust but I prefer to think it is my "changes in attitudes, changes in latitudes" way of approaching all things these days.  Naps used to be something old or lazy people took.  I was neither at that time so I felt confident in my thinking. Actually I felt a little above most of those I viewed as possible under achievers who took naps or rests. Now, I may see a flaw or two in my thinking.

FIRECRACKER BUSH

Travel helped me look at this midday break differently.  All of the countries I've visited have a "siesta" time.  In France, they call it lunch.  Everything stops for several hours, shops shut down, children come home from school and they nap.  Then around three, shops open up, children return to school and the day goes on.
(The exception probably is cities heavily invested in tourism.  I didn't notice anything closing in Paris.)

RANGOON CREEPER

As I wean myself from the all consuming religion we call career, the siesta time is more and more appealing.  On the days I have off I am getting better about not working on work, not making the thing I am working on work, and stopping in the middle of the day to relax.  I get into an air conditioned place, I read, maybe watch TV, but often times lay down and take a nap.

GINGER LILY

I no longer feel the self supposed importance of having a hyper-busy life.  Not everything in my job needs instant, constant or unending attention.  I am better at seeing what is truly important and what can wait a few hours.  Right now, though, I am feeling a little sleepy...
